Premise & Plot
The series kicks off when Fran Fine, a street-smart Jewish woman from Flushing, Queens, is dumped by her boyfriend and fired from her job at a bridal shop. While working as a door-to-door cosmetics saleswoman, she arrives at the Upper East Side townhouse of wealthy, widowed Broadway producer Maxwell Sheffield. Due to a misunderstanding, Maxwell hires Fran to be the nanny for his three children: Maggie, Brighton, and Grace.
As the seasons progress, Fran introduces her loud, loving, and unorthodox Queens lifestyle to the proper, stiff-upper-lip British household. A central driving force of the sitcom is the heavy "will-they-won't-they" romantic tension between Fran and Maxwell, which culminates in their marriage in the fifth season and the birth of twins in the series finale. A parallel dynamic unfolds between the household's dry-witted butler, Niles, and Maxwell's haughty business associate, C.C. Babcock, who constantly trade barbs before eventually falling in love and marrying.
