This $199 acrylic helmet with HEPA filters powered by fans designed to wear instead of a mask is being compared to sci-fi movies
MicroClimate created a visor with air filters that looks like a helmet, called Air. Air is just one of many unusual designs for face coverings since the COVID-19 pandemic hit. People have critiqued the design on social media, with a common theme being it looks too futuristic. In the dystopia of 2020, being able to afford a personal microclimate helmet to wear around might be the next status symbol. The coronavirus is still spreading, researchers don't know the long-term health impacts of the virus, Dr. Anthony Fauci says most pre-Pandemic activities can return to normal by summer 2022, and a record setting year of wildfires across the western US turned San Francisco's sky orange. Wearing a helmet out and about wouldn't be the strangest thing to happen this year.
MicroClimate's Air  is an acrylic visor that "enables an unobstructed view of the face." It's not the only unorthodox take on masks and face shields that has emerged since COVID-19 spread around the world.  Toronto-based Vyzr Technologies created the BioVyzr , a shield with what the company calls a "space-age aesthetic," and the venture has raised over $750,000 on Indiegogo.
BioVyzr's current pre-order price of $379, and regular at $498, make Air look like a relative steal at only $199.

Michael Hall envisioned a new wearable while skiing with his family in the mountains of Utah.  As he spoke with his children on the lift, he could not see their faces.  They were obstructed by ski masks, goggles, and other clothing.  This equipment quickly gets wet, cold, and gross.  He envisioned a new kind of wearable that would create a “Micro climate” around the head.  Michael made some early prototypes, fitting them with thermocouples, gas analyzers, and other instrumentation to prove out the ventilation and sealing.  David Hall, Chairman, quickly saw the potential of this technology beyond cold weather applications. He helped the team pivot to include health and air quality considerations.

FAQ AIR by MicroClimate.com   😷
First in our series of FAQ by MicroClimate.com How to take AIR on and off?
Can AIR be worn with glasses? Stay tuned as we release more updates.

Wilhelm Matthies We need to see evidence that the intake and outake filtration is at least N95. Would you please show that on your website and in a video?

Michael Smith I think it might be just an acrylic faceplate attached to fabric.  For $200.
James Madsen @Michael Smith That's what it looks like to me, too. And the fabric looks disturbingly like gaiter fabric, which has been suggested to break up particles into even tinier ones that can remain in the air longer, thus being worse than wearing nothing at all. I would imagine that if this company were really using N95-quality filtration it would be prominently advertised. I've submitted a question and am awaiting an answer. Even localized N95-quality filtration around the intake and outflow areas would work and would seem to be something that could be added relatively easily. The mask is beautiful, but the most important component is the filter material, both for exhalation (protecting others) and inhalation (protecting the wearer).

Derek Weiss@charapoKKo most of the companies rapidly producing these PAPR's (powered air purifying respirators) won't provide you with any sort of documentation of third party testing because these devices do not require NIOSH approval.  Basically, while these devices "might" perform to N95 standards, they also might not.  Airflow over filter media isn't as simple as just turning on a fan and putting XYZ "N95" filter material in and hoping for the best.  Flow rates across the filter material, duration of use, respiratory rate, all are factors these companies likely are not taking into account.  They are rapidly producing products based on the ignorance of the public.. while they might work, and might be better than a simple mask, nobody really knows until they have third party testing documentation.  Hall Logic N95 materials have been reserved by the CDC for medical applications and so we are restricted right now to HEPA filters.   We will be sending the filters to official labs for testing.  We will report the results once we have them.   We will be improving as materials become available.

charapoKKo I have two in my cart, ready to check out - but won't be making any orders until I can confirm this. Oddly difficult to find any information regarding the "filters".
