Teatro alla Scala, Milan
Opened in: 1778
Seating capacity: 2,200
Premiered: Verdi’s Nabucco in 1842

The auditorium, known for its excellent acoustics, is lavishly decorated with red velvet, silk and gilded stucco. The chandelier made of Bohemian crystal contains 365 lights.

Bellini’s Norma. Verdi’s Otello and Falstaff. Puccini’s Turandot.
All classics from opera’s golden age - and all works that debuted at the Teatro Alla Scala in Milan, a masterpiece itself since its inauguration in 1778.

Today’s Doodle honors La Scala’s legendary stage, known both for its size and the distinction of its players. The opera house’s treasured halls have hosted some of the world’s most inspirational opera, ballet, and classical performances over its long existence.

Seating more than 2,000 people, its theater has survived both a WWII bombing and restorative construction, continuing to pack houses and delight audiences for some 238 years.

Appearances are sometimes deceptive. The facade of the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, in the Lombard neo-classical style, is very austere. Its geometric lines reveal nothing of the opulent concert hall in red and gold, known as La Scala, which can accommodate nearly 2,200 people.

The boxes are separated by partitions, offering an intimacy that lends itself to romantic conversations or political secrets. This is a particularly Italian touch; French theatres always favoured open circles, so that the audience could see and be seen. The royal box is on the first balcony, ideally located, facing the stage.

The theatre, inaugurated in 1778 with the performance of a work by Salieri, went on to premiere flagship scores of the Italian repertoire, notably by Verdi and Puccini. One of its most renowned musical directors remains Arturo Toscanini, a conductor famous as much for his musical rigour as for his irascible temperament. But La Scala is above all famous for its audience, without a doubt one of the liveliest and most discerning in the world – capable of delirious ovations and monumental booing. Spectators in the last balconies, known to be the most virulent, have interrupted singers to express their disapproval. The performers are forewarned: singing at La Scala is a complete experience.

After Daniel Barenboim, Riccardo Chailly took over in 2015 as conductor of the orchestra. Before attending a performance, a visit to Teatro alla Scala’s museum should not be missed. Located within the theatre building, it is teeming with costumes, scores and other memorabilia.

The theatre was inaugurated on 3 August 1778 and was originally known as the Nuovo Regio Ducale Teatro alla Scala (New Royal-Ducal Theatre alla Scala). The premiere performance was Antonio Salieri's Europa riconosciuta.

Most of Italy's greatest operatic artists, and many of the finest singers from around the world, have appeared at La Scala. The theatre is regarded as one of the leading opera and ballet theatres in the world and is home to the La Scala Theatre Chorus, La Scala Theatre Ballet and La Scala Theatre Orchestra. The theatre also has an associate school, known as the La Scala Theatre Academy (Italian: Accademia Teatro alla Scala), which offers professional training in music, dance, stage craft and stage management.
