Claude Debussy was a French composer. He was among the most influential composers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He is sometimes seen as the first Impressionist composer, although he vigorously rejected the term.

Born to a family of modest means and little cultural involvement, Debussy showed enough musical talent to be admitted at the age of ten to France's leading music college, the Conservatoire de Paris. He originally studied the piano, but found his vocation in innovative composition, despite the disapproval of the Conservatoire's conservative professors. He took many years to develop his mature style, and was nearly 40 when he achieved international fame in 1902 with the only opera he completed, Pelléas et Mélisande.

Clair de Lune
Johann Debussy
"Clair de lune" (French for "moonlight") is a poem written by French poet Paul Verlaine in 1869. It is the inspiration for the third and most famous movement of Claude Debussy's 1890 Suite bergamasque. Debussy also made two settings of the poem for voice and piano accompaniment.

« But music, don't you know, is a dream from which the veils have been lifted. It's not even the expression of a feeling, it's the feeling itself  »  This quote from a letter sent by Debussy to his friend André Poniatowski might not have been referring to any specific piece but it's difficult to find better words than these to capture the essence of his most famous work "Clair de lune".  It might be one of the most ubiquitous and widely heard pieces of piano music ever written but despite the re-imagining as pop songs the countless re-orchestrations and uses in films like the original Fantasia or Ocean's 11.

 Debussy's
« Clair de Lune »
"Clair de lune"  remains an addictively captivating and crystalline expression of the inexpressible  from its first tentative notes to its final assured cadence. But I think to understand why this is the case and why out of all of Debussy’s piano music "Clair de lune"  is the one that's become so loved, we need to look at how it came into existence and how it sits within the cultural and aesthetic world in which it was written.
Let's deconstruct Debussy's "Clair de lune" .
👇   🎼   👇
Most people will know this music as a standalone piece but it's actually one of 4 movements of a piano suite that was started by Debussy in 1890 the Suite Bergamasque
Origin of the name: The suite's title, which means "Bergamask Suite," is inspired by the poem "Clair de lune" by Paul Verlaine. The poem references the "bergamask," a rustic dance from the Italian city of Bergamo. Debussy's work evokes the whimsical, masked dancers of the poem and the commedia dell'arte tradition.

At this point when Debussy was only 28 years old he hadn't had any of his piano music published and he was keen to start writing more for the instrument and so he devised a full movement work for piano made up of a Prelude a Minuet a Pavane whose title was eventually changed to "Passepied" and a third movement which he initially called Promenade Sentimentale.
A pavane is a stately, slow court dance from the 16th and 17th centuries, often performed in a procession with couples. The term can also refer to pieces of music composed in the slow, duple-time rhythm of this dance.
The passepied ("pass-foot", from a characteristic dance step) is a French court dance. Originating as a kind of Breton branle, it was adapted to courtly use in the 16th century and is found frequently in 18th-century French opera and ballet, particularly in pastoral scenes, and latterly also in baroque instrumental suites of dances. In English the passepied has been spelled "paspy" as well as "paspie" or "paspe", phonetic approximations of the French pronunciation.

Debussy's orchestral works include Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune (1894), Nocturnes (1897–1899) and Images (1905–1912). His music was to a considerable extent a reaction against Wagner and the German musical tradition. He regarded the classical symphony as obsolete and sought an alternative in his "symphonic sketches", La mer (1903–1905). His piano works include sets of 24 Préludes and 12 Études. Throughout his career he wrote mélodies based on a wide variety of poetry, including his own. He was greatly influenced by the Symbolist poetic movement of the later 19th century. A small number of works, including the early La Damoiselle élue and the late Le Martyre de saint Sébastien have important parts for chorus. In his final years, he focused on chamber music, completing three of six planned sonatas for different combinations of instruments.

Published in 1869 within the collection Fêtes galantes, Paul Verlaine’s short lyric poem “Clair de lune” compares the human soul to a dreamlike landscape populated by masked dancers. Its melancholic imagery of moonlight inspired famous musical compositions by Claude Debussy and Gabriel Fauré.

Text and Translation
The poem explores the contrast between a lively scene and underlying melancholy. The full French text and an English translation can be found in the referenced document, which portrays the soul as a, "chosen landscape," filled with, "charming masquerades and dancers" set against a, "sad and beautiful light of the moon".

Themes and Legacy
Melancholy and Mask: The figures in the poem sing of love, but their joy feels fragile and doubtful beneath decorative disguises.
Musical Settings: The poem's atmospheric quality has influenced composers, including Claude Debussy's famous musical adaptation.

A spoken recitation of Verlaine's poetry provides a sense of its musicality and rhythm:
