The solar system has two main types of planets. The inner planets -Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars - have rocky compositions. In contrast, the four outer planets, also called the Jovian, or giant, planets—Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune - are large objects that are composed primarily of hydrogen and helium (Jupiter and Saturn) or of ice, rock, hydrogen, and helium (Uranus and Neptune).
