Why some adults may need a measles vaccine booster shot
The CDC says more than 700 cases of measles have been reported this year, the highest number of cases since 1994. Now, the CDC says some adults born in the 1960s should consider getting a booster shot.
Dr. William Schaffner discuss why they issued this new warning.

People at home who are watching this may not be aware of is just how extremely contagious the measles are.
If you are somebody who's been infected with the measles - you may not show symptoms for I'm told something like ten to two weeks.
In that time you can infect a lot of people because apparently the virus lives for quite a long time in the air and on surfaces.
It is the most transmissible virus we know and for the three or four days before you get sick you can actually spread the virus to other people.
The virus can hang in the air. So after you leave the room somebody else walks in within two hours they can become sick if they're susceptible.

Measles is a highly contagious illness caused by a virus. It causes a widespread rash and flu-like symptoms. But measles isn’t just a rash.
Measles virus (genus Morbillivirus) causes measles. It’s an airborne disease, which means it spreads through the air when an infected person breathes, coughs, sneezes or talks.
The airborne droplets can remain in a room for two hours even after the person with measles is gone. Droplets can also land on surfaces you touch.⁣
It can make you severely ill and lead to life-threatening complications like brain inflammation and pneumonia. It can also make you more likely to get sick with other infections. 🦠⁣

Symptoms of measles can appear seven to 14 days after contact with another person with the virus, and can include a high fever, cough, runny nose, red, watery eyes and a rash.

The best way to prevent measles is by getting a measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine.

Johns Hopkins Children’s Center pediatric infectious diseases specialists Aaron Milstone, M.D., M.H.S., and Erica Prochaska, M.D., M.H.S., are available to discuss the following topics related to measles:

  • What is measles?
  • How measles returned after once being declared eliminated from the U.S.
  • Prevention measures
  • How to know if you are protected from measles
  • What to do if you suspect you or a family member has measles
