As far as popular songs go, “Bohemian Rhapsody” is pretty expansive. It starts with some a cappella vocals before turning into a ballad with a hard rock bridge. There’s the crowd-pleasing “opera” section, and a traditional seventies rock finish. All that space means musicians over the past few decades have had a lot of room to make it their own, no matter how unconventional or unexpected their arrangements have been. This all-trombone version definitely deserves a place in the cover canon. Over two dozen trombonists — from the Met Opera to the Houston Grand Opera; from Vanderbilt University to the Brazilian Symphony Orchestra — pitched in to realize the massive project, from those sonorous opening notes to the majestic solos.
Interest in the song has always been high on (and off) the Internet, but it’s especially on the rise with the release of the Freddie Mercury biopic, Bohemian Rhapsody. We can’t say, though, that we’d be entirely disappointed if multiplexes just showed this instead.
