The Health Benefits of Laughter
“The human race has only one really effective weapon and that is laughter.” ― Mark Twain
Sometimes laughter is over goofy things. Sometimes it’s irreverent.
Laughter is one of those mysterious human traits that is not completely understood. Some say people laugh to cover pain, or that laughter cannot exist without pain. Others say we laugh to console or even control others. What we do know is that all humans have the ability to laugh, it’s social, it’s contagious, you can’t fake it (not true laughter), it involves your entire body, and it can have a positive or negative influence on relationships (laughing at vs laughing with someone).
Regardless of what makes you laugh, laughter provides some amazing benefits for your body and mind. It doesn’t hurt your social skills, either.

How to Add Laughter to Your Day
- Watch funny movies or TV shows.
- Read funny websites, articles and/or comics.
- Seek out funny people. You can never have too many people in your life that make you light up. Fine them and nurture those relationships.
- Share a good joke or a funny story.
- Read or listen to funny books. Christopher Moore is one of my favorite humor writers.
- Have a game night with friends. Nothing like a good beer, good friends and a little competition to get the laughter started.
- Do something silly. Spring loaded eyeball glasses or bubba teeth… you get the picture.
- Make time for fun activities like bowling, miniature golfing or karaoke. In the interest of maintaining friendships, I personally don’t impose my singing skills, or lack thereof, on anyone. However, I won’t hesitate to belt out a few belly laughs at the expense of my friends who have not figured out just how bad theirs are!
- Play with a pets or kids. Get on the floor with them and let yourself go. Release your inner goofiness!
- Go to a “laughter yoga” class. This is real, folks. I’ve never participated in one, but it looks like an “interesting” experience. Below is one of my favorite videos on laughing yoga. I dare you not to laugh!

In this study, the research team used multiple-choice questions
to find out how likely people were to react to various situations with
laughter. Those with heart disease were least likely to laugh about
life, and those with healthy hearts laughed most!
Laughter Boosts Your Immune System
Some studies suggest that laughter has a positive impact on a person's immune system — if you have a positive outlook
on life and laugh every day, you may just have more antibodies to
combat infections, and your immune cells could be stronger. Other
studies into the same topic were inconclusive, so further research is
needed to support the claim that laughter boosts the immune system.
What's clear is that high levels of stress have a decidedly
negative effect on the immune system. And doesn't laughter make stress
melt away, to some extent? I suggest that you use April Fool's Day as an
excuse to test the link between laughter and immune response yourself.
From this day onward, try to laugh heartily at least 10 minutes a day,
and see if you get ill less!

Laughing Is Good For Diabetics
Diabetes isn't funny, but laughter does seem to have a positive
effect on a diabetic's blood sugar levels. Diabetics who are anxious,
sad, stressed, or scared are very likely to see their blood glucose
levels soar to dangerous levels. Would the reverse be true, too?
Researchers tried to find out by exposing a small group of people with
Type 2 diabetes, who weren't receiving insulin therapy, to a tedious
lecture one day and to a hilarious comedy the next.
While you can hardly call a study of 19 diabetics conclusive, the
results did suggest that laughter is a great medicine indeed. The
study's authors came up with several theories to explain the idea that
laughter keeps blood glucose levels down, but were not sure how accurate
any of them were. What they were certain about was the “importance of
daily opportunities for laughter in patients with diabetes”!

and ended by saying that such a laugh was money in a man’s pocket,
because it cut down the doctor’s bills like everything.
~ “Tom Sawyer” by Mark Twain

A smile starts on the lips,
A grin spreads to the eyes,
A chuckle comes from the belly
But a good laugh bursts forth from the soul, overflows, and bubbles all around.

A chuckle comes from the belly
But a good laugh bursts forth from the soul, overflows, and bubbles all around.
