NYBG Orchid Show 2022
A Kaleidoscope of Color
New York City will bloom with color and fun at The New York Botanical Garden in early 2022. The garden’s popular orchid exhibition will return with NYBG's The Orchid Show: Jeff Leatham's Kaleidoscope, Feb. 26-May 1, 2022. There was no formal Orchid Show at the Bronx institution in 2021, and it was cut short in March 2020 when the garden closed due to the pandemic. But the 2022 event is back in full force for its 19th year. The exhibit will amaze flower fans of all ages with breathtaking orchid towers of orange, yellow, and green, fields of white, and overhead plumes of purple.
For now, though, you can visit the New York Botanical Garden to see the Holiday Train Show and NYBG GLOW.
Leatham, who designed the 2020 Orchid Show, will update his dazzling creations for 2022. He'll transform each gallery of the exhibition in NYBG's Enid A. Haupt onservatory into a different color experience inspired by the turn of a kaleidoscope. An expert floral designer, Leatham worked on the project with horticulturists from NYBG to assemble orchids from its collections. Other expert orchid growers were part of the team, too. Orchids of almost every kind, including rare and iconic specimens, will be on display in various configurations for visitors to enjoy.
“I am thrilled to bring Kaleidoscope back to the New York Botanical Garden in 2022. Much like when you look into a kaleidoscope, the view is never the same,” said Leatham, who is the artistic director of the Four Seasons Hotel George V in Paris. “My reinvention of Kaleidoscope will be totally different installations than two years ago. Every turn will display a new vision while maintaining the thematic element of every gallery focusing on a different color experience. With this design, visitors will appreciate the beauty of orchids and see the NYBG's Conservatory in exciting new ways.”
FUN FACT: Leatham is a floral designer to the stars. His clients include Dolly Parton, Tina Turner, and many others.

The Orchid Show - NYC’s ode to springtime - should not to be confused with the season’s other stupendous garden party, the Macy’s Flower Show. However, both bloom fests are worth a visit. If you’re not familiar, The New York Botanical Garden’s Orchid Show exhibits thousands of species of beautiful blossoming orchids, and it’s one of the best NYC events in March, which lasts through April.

Kahu ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿฑ Hawaiian Word for "Pets" ❤️

❤️ ๐Ÿถ ๐Ÿ•   "KAHU"   ๐Ÿฑ ๐Ÿˆ ❤️
https://64.media.tumblr.com/e47f47f2bee8c087fe658cbc2107ab0f/5d38830bc279122f-96/s500x750/8fe37c728b2a1168b082bdd2a5961d3bda6c6cc8.pnjhttps://64.media.tumblr.com/07085e2b9c12f8b2c2040ede5d5c56ff/e4e96b5ccce267f7-70/s1280x1920/ac88b36e1f8b595e295acd66adf01237426b3d34.jpg
๐Ÿ‘‡  ๐Ÿ“บ  ๐Ÿ‘‡
Hawaiian Word of the Day:
Most of us use the Hawaiian word Kahu when we refer to the pastor of our church, a preacher or minister.
Kahu in its first meanings is an honored attendant, guardian, nurse, keeper of bones, regent, keeper, administrator. It is also a warden, caretaker, master, mistress — even one who has a dog, cat, pig, or other pet.
https://64.media.tumblr.com/cabdef2bbb77f4f4bd13a4281a1e09b8/e4e96b5ccce267f7-70/s1280x1920/da564cbcc313ac866955d6950779bfa2a483a8de.pnj
In Hawaiian culture, you do not call yourself your pet’s “owner.” You are referred to as their “Kahu.” The word Kahu has a deep meaning and is defined as the sacred role of a guardian, protector, steward or honored attendant. Essentially, someone entrusted with the safe keeping of something precious - something cherished. What a Kahu protects is not their property. What they protect is a part of their soul. We become better when we truly love an animal. We embrace the connection of all life when we embody what it means to be a Kahu.

In Hawaiian, KAHU primarily means "guardian," "protector," or "caretaker," especially in a context of deep responsibility and trust. It's often used to describe someone who cares for another person, an animal, or even a place or tradition. The term emphasizes a relationship of stewardship and devotion, rather than simple ownership.
❤️
Here's a more detailed breakdown:
๐Ÿถ
Beyond Pet Ownership:
While it can refer to someone who has a pet, "kahu" goes beyond the concept of "owner." It signifies a deep, spiritual connection and responsibility for the well-being of the animal, suggesting the pet is cherished as a beloved part of the family.
๐Ÿฑ
Spiritual and Traditional Context:
Traditionally, "kahu" were entrusted with maintaining sacred sites (heiau), artifacts, and ceremonies. They were knowledgeable in Hawaiian rituals and practices, acting as mediators between the spiritual and physical worlds.
๐Ÿฆœ
Stewardship and Caregiving:
The term extends to various forms of guardianship, such as teachers who nurture their students, caretakers of the land, and even those who protect cultural knowledge and traditions.
๐Ÿฐ
Intimate and Confidential Relations:
The Hawaiian dictionary according to Nฤ Puke Wehewehe สปลŒlelo Hawaiสปi indicates that "kahu" can imply a very close and confidential relationship, especially between a guardian and something they are entrusted to protect.
๐Ÿด
Examples:
A pastor of a church is often referred to as a "kahu," as is someone who takes care of a pet or a historical site.

Ramadan ๐Ÿ•Œ Eid Mubarak

#Ramadan from Holidays-Fetes
Ramadan is the ninth month in the Islamic calendar, which consists of 12 months and lasts for about 354 days. The word “Ramadan” is derived from an Arabic word for intense heat, scorched ground and shortness of food and drink. It is considered to be the most holy and blessed month. Fighting is not allowed during this period.

The month of Ramadan traditionally begins with a new moon sighting, marking the start of the ninth month in the Islamic calendar. Many Muslims (except children, the sick and the elderly) abstain from food, drink, and certain other activities during daylight hours in Ramadan.

This is considered as the holiest season in the Islamic year and commemorates the time when the Qu’ran (Islamic holy book) is said to have been revealed to the Prophet Muhammad. This occurred on Laylat Al-Qadr, one of the last 10 nights of the month.  Ramadan ends when the first crescent of the new moon is sighted again, marking the new lunar month’s start. Eid-al-Fitr is the Islamic holiday that marks the end of Ramadan.

Ramadan Traditions
Lanterns:
#Ramadan from Holidays-Fetes #Ramadan from Holidays-Fetes#Ramadan from Holidays-Fetes
Traditional colored lanterns, also known as Fanoos, are an integral part of Ramadan in Egypt, where they are hung at the entrance of each building, supermarket and shop. The tradition is believed to date back to the Fatimid period and has spread to other countries in the Arab world.
Pheni and Khajla:
Discs of thin, deep-fried vermicelli and crispy, puffed up discs of flaky pastry soaked with milk and eaten for the pre-dawn meal, or Suhur, in Pakistan. Heaps of both items can be found at sweets shops and bakeries during the entire month. In Lebanon, Jordan and Palestinian territories, the equivalent is Qatayef and Kunafa.

Dates With Names:
In Egypt, dates — typically eaten first to break the fast — are named after leaders, politicians or celebrities. From ousted dictator Hosni Mubarak to Islamist President Mohammad Morsi to the current president, Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, Egyptian Ramadan dates have kept in line with the county’s political oscillations.

Mehebes:
Despite the perpetual turmoil of Iraq, one surviving tradition is mehebes, a popular game played during Ramadan where players hope to win sweets by guessing who among their opposing team is hiding a ring in their hands.

https://78.media.tumblr.com/bb32bda6de9eed797da4dab71147018b/tumblr_padcr4p5Xk1v3adc7o2_400.gif
Cannons:
Before television and radio, it was the only way to alert people it was time to break the fast. A few places, such as Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates, have kept up the tradition. Every day at sunset during the holy month, cannon shots are fired from 12 locations at iftar time.

Musaharati:
A person entrusted with waking people up for a pre-dawn meal and prayers ahead of the day’s fast by banging on drums. While the centuries-old tradition is fading away — phone alarms replacing the drumming — the custom is still alive in some parts of Beirut, Cairo and Gaza.

The typical drum cry goes:  “Oh, sleeping one, wake up and pray for God - Ramadan Kareem.”
#Ramadan from Holidays-Fetes
When Does Ramadan Begin and End?
Islam is based on a lunar calendar, so the start of Ramadan on the Gregorian calendar varies each year.
Once the new crescent moon has been sighted, observance begins. The new moon at the end of the month signals Eid al-Fitr, a three-day festival marking the end of fasting.
The majority of Shiites tend to mark Ramadan a day later than Sunnis, although this Ramadan is an exception and a rare event where Shiite and Sunnis will mark Ramadan together — at least in most places.

End-of-Winter Quotes ๐ŸŒป
That Will Make You Excited For Spring
The time has finally come, people. The first day of spring is Mar. 20, which means that it is time to soak up inspirational end-of-winter quotes.
