Since 1992, the New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx has held its Holiday Train Show. The magical exhibit recreates 190 of New York City’s landmark buildings in miniature using plant materials like bark, leaves, and seeds. Twenty-five model trains zoom in and out of the cityscape over bridges and under tunnels, just like in the real-life city. The pieces of art are created by the team from Applied Imagination, which was founded by Paul Busse in 1991. The following year, he brought his creations to the NYBG. To learn more about this iconic holiday event, we spoke to Joanna Groarke, vice president for exhibitions and programming at NYBG.

A firehouse cat is a stray or adopted animal that lives at a fire station and becomes part of the crew, providing companionship and comfort to firefighters. Examples include Flame, a cat who lived at a South Carolina firehouse for ten years, and Sheddy, a cat who lived at a New York firehouse for 20 years 👨🚒🐈 Roles: Firehouse cats often act as mascots or honorary members of the department. They provide a calming presence, especially after difficult calls.
👨🚒🐈 Activities: Some firehouse cats are known for specific behaviors. For example, the cat Flame seemed to supervise the firefighters during tasks and would get out of the way when the alarms sounded, according to this Facebook video. Another historical example, Sam the fire pole sliding cat, was famous for sliding down the fire pole, notes NBC News.
👨🚒🐈
Origin: Many firehouse cats, like Flame, start as strays that are taken in by the firefighters.
👨🚒🐈
Challenges: There can be challenges with a firehouse cat. For instance, one cat was removed after an anonymous complaint about potential health code violations and sterility issues, explains CBS News.
👨🚒🐈
Retirement: Older firehouse cats may be retired when they are no longer able to perform their duties or when their health concerns arise.
During last night's shift, Officer Cardin found this little bundle of fur hiding at the base of a lamppost at the corner of Florida Avenue and Pine Street. It was early in the shift so he brought her in, outfitted a records box and put her safely inside the kennel at the station. But, the little cutie caught the eye (and heart) of Sgt Wallace. He didn't want her to be alone all night, so he scooped her up and kept her with him throughout the shift. She seemed to take to her new role as partner to Sgt Wallace, however, she did fall asleep her first night on the job.
We think all is forgiven as she now has a new home with her partner Sgt. Wallace. Congratulations to little feline officer Kelsey on her new loving home. 🐾 🐾 🐾 🐾 🐾 🐾 🐾🐾 🐾 🐾 🐾 🐾 🐾 🐾 This cat showed up at a police station. - Officer Donut

Fred was born in the spring of 2005 in Brooklyn, New York. In September 2005, he was rescued by Animal Care & Control of New York City,
suffering from severe pneumonia and a collapsed lung. Fred was adopted
by assistant district attorney Carol Moran, as part of a foster care
program run by Animal Care & Control of New York City, and was
nursed back to health.
In
February 2006, Fred was enlisted by the Brooklyn District Attorney’s
office as an undercover agent, posing as a would-be patient to help the
NYPD apprehend Steven Vassall, a Brooklyn man suspected of acting as a
veterinarian without proper license or training. Working with human
undercover detective Stephanie Green-Jones, Fred was bait in a February
3, 2006, sting operation to apprehend Steven Vassall, who was charged
with unauthorized veterinary practice, criminal mischief, injuring
animals and petty larceny. In May 2007, Vassall pleaded guilty to the charges of fraud and
practicing veterinary medicine without a licence. As a result of his
plea he was sentenced to probation and mandatory psychiatric treatment.
On May 18, 2006, Fred was presented with a Law Enforcement
Appreciation Award by Brooklyn district attorney Charles J. Hynes. Fred
was later honored on July 8, 2006, at "Broadway Barks 8!", the New York
City Theater District’s dog and cat adopt-a-thonbenefit hosted by Mary Tyler Moore and Bernadette Peters. He was presented with the Mayor’s Alliance Award, which is given to remarkable animals.
