How is sound defined? 
What do the words “no one” mean? 
Three things are needed to make a sound. 
A vibration, a medium through which the vibration can propagate, and a receiver to measure that a sound was made.

Sounds are waves of high and low air pressure called compression and refraction. The amplitude of the wave determines how loud the sound is. And the frequency of the waves determines the pitch that we hear. These waves of pressure enter our ear canal, which vibrate our eardrum which transfers this vibration to 3 tiny bones in the middle of our ear, which in turn transfer the vibrations to the cochlea. These vibrations result in an electrical signal carried by the auditory nerve to the auditory complex of the temporal lobe of the brain. It is here that the electrical signals are processed, and allows us to hear things.

The frequency of sound that our brains can interpret however is limited to 20Hz to 20kHz. One hertz just means one cycle per second. IS sound only a sound when a person hears it?  If no person is around, the sound can still be perceived by animals. Other animals hear sounds using the same mechanism as us. In many cases their hearing is actually more acute than ours. Dogs for instance, can hear sounds more than 45Khz.  

What if we take all the animals out of the forest? There are still millions of insects in the forest that can definitely hear sounds. A fly for example, can hears sounds of 50Khz.

What if we take all the creatures from the animal kingdom out of the picture, including all the insects in the forest? But there are other trees. In a 2014 study published in the California Academy of sciences, It was shown that plants can detect and respond to sounds. It’s been theorized that sounds could trigger a response via mechanoreceptors, or fine hairlike structures.   

There are also trillions of microscopic life forms like bacteria. In a 2016 study by Shaobin Gu et al, experimental results showed that E. Coli bacteria exposed to sound waves had a faster growth rate compared to the control group. Is this not evidence for a kind of “hearing” of sounds by bacteria?  

Let’s take all living things out of the forest. Maybe it is lonely tree in the middle of a desert with no other life forms.  When it falls, air is disturbed, and sand is disturbed. A large tree would likely create extremely low frequency sound waves, which can travel very large distances. In fact, sonic waves with a frequency below 20 hz are imperceptible to the human ear. But elephants can hear them over 15 miles away.  If the tree was located in a forest in Africa or jungle in Asia, an elephant might hear the sound.  

Let’s take all elephants away. Then the sand was disturbed, the air was disturbed. It turns out that if the air is disturbed, the micro disturbance of the air, particularly if there are no structures to absorb the sound, could travel far.

Let's eliminate all living things within a 100 mile radius of the tree.  The leaves of the fallen tree will be disturbed. And given what I said above about plants being able to perceive sounds, the tree itself will “hear” its own fall. But let’s go even further and say that this was a dry dead tree in a desert with absolutely no living thing nearby for over a 100 miles radius.

The potential energy of an upright tree was converted to kinetic energy. And this kinetic energy was converted to disturbance in the air and ground, and the sound hitting the ground would propagate through the earth. If the question is interpreted as “did” the tree make a sound vs. “does” the tree make a sound. It definitely did make a sound. But nobody was there at the time to perceive the sound. However, if a scientist is allowed on to the scene and is asked whether the tree made a sound. He would be able to ascertain from examining the changes in the sand, and the tree, that indeed the tree must have fallen, and made a sound.

Let’s make the tree free floating in space with no air and no ground. Since there is no medium such as air or ground to carry the sound, the kind of sound that we humans or animals or living things on earth may recognize did not get made. So, it made no known sounds that we are aware of.  

But did it make a different kind of sound? By moving the mass, we have made a change in the gravitational bending of space that surrounds this tree. And we have added kinetic energy to the tree, which also affects space time.  If we had sensitive enough instruments, we could detect this difference in the gravitational disturbance made by the tree.  This instrument would allow us to “hear” the tree even in space.

Yeah I loved that part. But it's all about how you define it there as well. The movement of the molecules might take a while to reach your ear but only when it hits your eardrum is it actually sound (if you define sound like the people answering no to this question).
It's like what he said about light being invisible or "not light" before it bounces off of something and hitting your retina.

The definition of sound is ‘vibrations that travel through the air or another medium and can be heard when they reach a person's or animal's ear’. The definition is not ‘vibrations that ARE heard’ but ‘vibrations that CAN be heard’. Just because something isn’t there to hear the sound, doesn’t mean that there is no sound, it’s still present. Light is not invisible until it bounces of something. It is visible 'in a vacuum' as long as it travels in the direction of your eyes.

Light works as a particle or a packet of information. That is to say if you receive a light particle it is light and is received as such, energy has been transferred.  But "sound" is only sound when a vibration is in the observable range. That is to say we don't call very low frequency tremors or very high frequency vibrations sounds if we cant hear them. If you travel fast enough at a low frequency vibrating object it will appear to make sound and then if you travel faster it will stop making sound as the frequency will be too high to be heard. Something that doesn't make a sound when when you are moving relative to it, but if moving relatively faster towards it, it is changed will and make a sound due to the listener.  This is to say that the difference between a vibration and a sound is based on the receivers range of hearing ergo a vibration requires a listener to become a sound. I.e without an observer there is no sound.

To bring back to the light example if you said light in the visible spectrum, that would work better as like sound in the audible vibration spectrum it depends on the receiver. I.e It requires a receiver to be classified as sound or visible light then without that observer/receiver it is just a vibration or light, the relativity of the observer to the vibration/light is the key to defining it as what it is, therefore it isn't sound or visible light without that observer.

We all know that food and drinks can go bad. Your refrigerator likely has items right now that were once wholesome food and is now...not wholesome, and no longer food. But one basic component of our lives that might seem immune to that spoilage is water. It’s a pretty fundamental compound, after all, and doesn’t contain anything other than a bunch of hydrogen and oxygen, so there doesn’t seem to be anything in there that other organisms could defile. When your leftover mint chutney goes bad, it makes sense, but water seems so impervious that noticing an expiration date on a bottle of water seems kind of ludicrous. But it’s not completely wrong. Water doesn’t rot or spoil like many foods, but there’s definitely a shelf life.

When TAP Water Goes Bad
Water that comes out of your faucet has most likely been treated with chlorine, which helps keep it free from microorganisms that can do you harm. But that water will react with the carbon dioxide in the air continuously, lowering the pH of the water, making it more acidic, which will can make it taste funny. Additionally, uncovered water will collect dust and other stuff from the air, adding to the unpleasantness. Eventually, this process could even make you sick—although the water would have to sit there a very long time before it became dangerous as opposed to just gross.
At the same time, that chlorine that was added is off-gassing and leeching away, making the water more inviting to organisms. The executive summary is that a glass of tap water left out overnight might taste weird, but is probably okay to drink from a health point of view. But water that sits out for a very long time should probably be avoided—especially if there are obvious signs of things, you know, living in it.
In terms of stored water, as a general rule tap water can be stored for about six months as long as it’s in food-grade containers that have been sanitized. After that, the chlorine treatment will no longer be effective, and even trace amounts of stuff can start to grow in there. This includes filtered water. That filter may do a great job of pulling out bad stuff from your tap water, but the moment the water interacts with the atmosphere, all of these processes start up, eventually leading to a glass of water that is unpleasant at best, and potentially sickening at worst.

When Bottled Water Goes Bad
Commercially bottled water lasts longer than exposed water, but it will eventually go bad. The water is pure when bottled, and the plastic (mostly) prevents microorganisms from getting in there—but the plastic itself is the problem. The plastic isn’t totally impenetrable, so the water will very slowly react with the air outside the bottle, evaporating and providing a slim-but-not-zero chance of contamination. More importantly, chemicals from the plastic can slowly leech into the water—a process sped up by exposure to heat and the sun. These chemicals can be dangerous in large amounts, but there probably isn’t enough of them in an old bottle of water to hurt you—but it will hurt the taste. This is why old bottled water sometimes has that “plastic” taste to it.
The rule of thumb on bottled water is that it’s fine for about two years - if it remains sealed and stored in a cool, shaded place
Once that bottle is opened, the clock speeds up, because you’re part of the equation. The moment your lips or fingers (or, you know, any other part of your body) touch a container of water, you’re introducing microorganisms into that container. Over time, they can grow and thrive, which makes using the same yucky glass on your nightstand or re-using a water bottle without cleaning it a surefire way to get gross, disgusting water and possible illness. And if you leave bottled water open and exposed to the air, the same degenerative process that ruins your tap water works on it.
The natural state of the universe is entropy - and that includes innocent-seeming water. It takes a long time, but like everything else in this world, that glass of water on your nightstand will eventually spoil. (Entropy is a scientific concept that is most commonly associated with a state of disorder, randomness, or uncertainty.)

People taking Ozempic and Wegovy may be at increased risk of developing a debilitating eye condition that can cause irreversible vision loss, a study published Wednesday in JAMA Ophthalmology finds. The authors stressed, however, that more studies are needed to confirm a link between the blockbuster drugs and vision problems.

Non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy, or NAION, is a condition that affects the optic nerve, a bundle of fibers that connects to the back of the eye and carries signals to the brain so a person can see. In people with NAION, blood flow to the optic nerve gets reduced or blocked, leading to sudden vision loss.

“It is, in effect, a stroke of the optic nerve,” said senior study author Dr. Joseph Rizzo, the director of neuro-ophthalmology at Mass Eye and Ear in Boston.

NAION is the second most common optic nerve disease in the U.S., occurring in up to 10 out of 100,000 people, according to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and it’s one of the most common causes of sudden blindness. The condition is permanent with no known treatment.

The new study was based on an analysis of medical records spanning six years from more than 16,800 patients in the Boston area, none of whom were initially diagnosed with NAION. 
The researchers focused on a subset of those patients — about 1,700 — who either had diabetes, were overweight or had obesity, and compared outcomes after 36 months in those who were prescribed semaglutide to those who weren’t. Semaglutide is the ingredient in Ozempic and Wegovy.

A new study, which appeared in JAMA Ophthalmology Trusted Source earlier this week, identified a potential link between the diabetes and weight loss drug, semaglutide and a rare eye disease that causes blindness.
The condition, called nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION), affects around 2.3 people per 100,000Trusted Source people in the United States.
 
The new study finds that people with diabetes who were prescribed semaglutide — which is marketed as Ozempic and Wegovy, among other names — were more than four times more likely to develop NAION compared with people with diabetes on other medications.
Similarly, those who were prescribed the drug to treat overweight or obesity were over seven times more likely to receive a NAION diagnosis than people taking other weight loss drugs.

What is NAION?
Despite being relatively rare, NAION is a significant cause of blindness in the U.S. It causes a painless, permanent loss of vision, which often occursTrusted Source when waking from sleep.
Medical News Today spoke with Joel Kopelman, MD an oculofacial plastic surgeon and board-certified ophthalmologist.

He explained that: “This vision loss can range from mild to severe. The condition can progress quickly, with most of the vision loss occurring within days to weeks of the onset of symptoms.

Kopleman, who was not involved in the recent study, also told us that NAION has “an estimated incidence of 2-10 per 100,000 people annually in the United States. The prevalence is similar globally,” he explained, “although exact figures can vary based on regional health demographics and reporting practices.”

Most commonly, it affects middle-aged or older white people. Generally, it only affects one eye at a time. However, for around 43% of people, their other eye becomes affected within the following 3 years.
