What Is Ozempic?
Ozempic (semaglutide) is a prescription drug
and Type 2 diabetes injection approved by the U.S. Food and Drug
Administration. It is also used to reduce the risk of major
cardiovascular events in adults with Type 2 diabetes who already have
cardiovascular disease. It belongs to the glucagon-like peptide 1
(GLP-1) receptor agonist class of medications.
The drug isn’t FDA-approved to treat obesity, but some doctors
prescribe it for off-label uses such as weight loss for people without
Type 2 diabetes. However, Wegovy (semaglutide) is another injectable form of semaglutide which is approved by the FDA for weight loss. Other drugs in the same class include Mounjaro (tirzepatide), Rybelsus (semaglutide), Saxenda (liraglutide) and Victoza (liraglutide).
People with Type 1 diabetes shouldn’t use Ozempic, and studies haven’t shown if Ozempic is safe for children under 18.
Ozempic is an FDA-approved prescription medication for the treatment
of type 2 diabetes in adults. It helps improve blood sugar in adults
with type 2 diabetes and is proven to lower hemoglobin A1C, a measure of
blood glucose over time, according to research cited on Ozempic’s site.
It also helps adults with type 2 diabetes and known heart disease lower
their risk for cardiovascular events like stroke or heart attack. The
active compound in Ozempic, semaglutide, is a glucagon-like peptide-1
(GLP-1) receptor agonist. It works by activating GLP-1 receptors
throughout the body and enhancing the effects of the naturally occurring
hormone GLP-1.
“GLP-1 serves multiple key functions in the
body,” explains Christopher McGowan, M.D., a gastroenterologist
specializing in obesity medicine and endobariatrics, and founder of True
You Weight Loss in North Carolina. “It boosts the release of insulin by
the pancreas in response to food intake, which helps to control blood
sugar. Likewise, it reduces the release of glucagon—a hormone that
increases blood glucose—thereby also helping to control blood sugar.” Ozempic

People are worried about reports of weight regain after weight loss medications are stopped, but there are steps you can take to avoid the dreaded ‘Mounjaro plateau.’
New weight loss drugs have been all the rage, and for good reason: They’re remarkably effective — at least, as long as you continue taking them. Medications like Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, and Zepbound all work by re-creating the effects of GLP-1, a hormone your gut naturally produces when you’ve eaten that reduces hunger and cravings.
Recent research, however, has found that when people stop taking these medications, weight regain can occur, a phenomenon that has been called “Ozempic rebound” and “Mounjaro plateau.”
People quit these medications for numerous reasons, including the high cost, especially if you don’t have health insurance (and many insurers have begun dropping coverage for these drugs); supply issues, given the huge demand; and unwanted side effects.
Clinical trials have also shown that up to 10 percent of people on these drugs will quit taking them because of side effects like nausea or disruptive bowel habits.

Nausea was the most common side effect reported, followed by constipation second and diarrhea third. Severe side effects of Ozempic include allergic reactions, changes in vision and pancreatitis. On Jan. 11, 2024, the FDA released a safety communication informing the public that the agency hasn’t found a connection between Ozempic or Wegovy and suicidal thoughts.
However, the FDA said that it “cannot definitively rule out that a small risk may exist,” and it continues to investigate the issue.
In addition to suicidal thoughts, the FDA continues to investigate FAERS reports of hair loss linked to Ozempic.
Common Ozempic side effects include:
Abdominal pain (7.3%)
Constipation (5%)
Diarrhea (8.5%)
Nausea (15.8%)
Vomiting (5%)
Patients usually experience side effects while gradually increasing the drug’s dosage until reaching the maximum dose, a process known as dose escalation. For instance, 15.8% of individuals taking 0.5 mg doses reported nausea in trials compared to 20.3% of individuals on 1 mg doses.

Because Ozempic carries an FDA boxed warning for potential thyroid tumors or cancers, you should see a doctor immediately if you develop swelling in your neck, a lump in your neck, hoarseness, trouble swallowing or shortness of breath.
Ozempic may also cause side effects that are signs of other severe problems that require medical attention right away.
When to see a doctor right away for Ozempic side effects:
Hypoglycemia with symptoms such as shaking, fast heartbeat, sweating, nervousness, hunger, dizziness, irritability or confusion.
Serious allergic reaction with symptoms that include swelling of the throat, tongue, lips or face. This may include problems breathing, a rash, rapid heartbeat or dizziness.
