World Environment Day is celebrated worldwide annually on 5 June to put a spotlight on environmental challenges of our time. It’s important because it reminds us to look after our planet and keep it safe for future generations.
World Environment Day focuses on land restoration, stopping desertification and building drought resilience.
World Environment Day inception dates back to 1974 when it was first commemorated. The United Nations General Assembly initiated this global event to draw attention to various environmental challenges that pose risks not only to humanity but also to the well-being of animals and plants.
Each year, a different country assumes the role of hosting World Environment Day, and the chosen theme revolves around pressing environmental issues that demand immediate attention. Consequently, the theme varies from year to year.
In the preceding year, the theme for World Environment Day was ‘Time for Nature,’ while this year’s theme centers on ‘Reimagine. Recreate. Restore,’ focusing on the restoration of ecosystems. Across the globe, numerous movements and initiatives are underway to safeguard the environment. However, as inhabitants of this planet, it is also our responsibility to contribute towards environmental restoration and sustainability.
