Mummy Calzone

Halloween is right around the corner. Whether you are hosting a Halloween party, or cooking up a fun Halloween dinner, you will love this Mummy Calzone that we created by taking a simple pizza recipe and transforming it a bit.

Over the years I have served my family many Halloween Dinners – from our fun Spider Taco Ring, to Spooky Witch Fingers, to Bones and Cheese Dip, Drinks and of course fun Halloween Dessert. Even if we don’t have a Halloween Party, and it’s only our family, it’s always a fun time.

The Mummy Calzone begins with our Bread Machine Pizza Dough Recipe. It’s quick and easy. (I really need to use my bread machine more.) And then filled with our favorite pizza toppings. You can certainly add whatever pizza toppings your family likes. Let me show you how we made “George” the Mummy Calzone…

Instructions
Pizza Dough
  1. Layer in your bread machine as directed, mine is always liquids on bottom then flour, sugar, butter, salt and yeast at the top.
  2. Put on dough cycle (mine is 1 hour 3 minutes) and let it go
Calzone
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line a large cookie sheet with parchment paper
  2. Remove pizza dough and roll out into a rectangle
  3. Using a small spatula as your guide, cut the dough along the edge with a sharp knife
  4. Wrap the mummy by folding over each edge of the dough
  5. Transfer to large cookie sheet. Use 2 large spatulas to transfer if necessary.
  6. Beat egg in a small bowl, brush onto calzone
  7. Sprinkle with corn meal, optional
  8. Bake for 20-30 minutes or until golden brown
  9. While the calzone is setting for a few minutes, create the eyes by slicing the ends from 2 black olives and stuffing with a bit of mozzarella cheese

While the calzone is resting, you can prepare his eyes. Slice off both round ends of two black olives, stuff with shredded mozzarella into them and placed them on the mummy body for the eyes.

The Mummy Calzone turned out pretty large, so depending on your family size, you can cut the dough in half and only make 1, or make 2 smaller calzones.
