In the past week a stupid controversy has been whipped up by the leader (if they really have one) of the conservative UMP,
Jean-François Copé. He’s objecting to a children’s book being
‘promoted’ in primary schools. In fact, this book is one of 500 texts
suggested by the ABCD of Equality website to the 10 schools trialling a program to combat sex stereotypes.
So what’s he so het up
about? Nudity!
Nudity destroying children’s respect for authority.
This cheeky and charming little book, Tous à poil !
(Everyone naked!), shows a variety of people stripping off and in the
end having a swim.
In standard children’s book style, it repeats the
same formula on each page:
- Á poil le bébé ! The baby naked!
- Á poil la boulangère ! The (lady) baker naked!
- À poil le policier ! The policeman naked!
- À poil la mamie ! Granny naked!
- À poil le chien ! The dog naked!
- Á poil la maîtresse ! The teacher naked!
- À poil les dames de la cantine ! The canteen ladies naked! etc.
The purpose of all this is pretty clear
to anyone with a brain—to defuse body anxiety by showing a variety of body types, satisfy that childish curiosity and to show that people are, at some level, all the same.
It was interesting to see some of the other books, either recommended or related.
Zizi, Zézette : mode d’emploi (Willy, Fanny *: instruction manual)

Specifications:
willies and fannies are bespoke products. This explains why they are
all different. Shape, size, colour are all customised features that make
each willy or fanny a unique and exclusive model.
à quoi tu joues ?
(what are you playing at?) contrasts common stereotypes (e.g. boys
never cry) with a fold-out picture showing the opposite (e.g. Yannick Noah crying after winning a tennis match). Although all the examples I’ve seen seem to be stereotypes about boys there are also apparently girls piloting rockets and so on.

Pour Max,
les choses sont claires et le monde est divisé en deux : les "avec
zizi", qui sont les plus forts, et les "sans zizi", les filles, quoi !
Les pauvres... Jusqu'au jour où arrive Zazie, une fille qui joue au
foot, dessine des mammouths, grimpe aux arbres... C'est sûr, il s'agit
d'une imposture. Max décide de prouver à tout le monde que Zazie est une
tricheuse qui a un zizi. Une surprise l'attend.
For Max, things are simple
and the world is divided in two: the “with peepee”, who are strong, and
the “without peepee”, girls, poor things! Until the day that Poppy
arrives, a girl who plays football, draws mammoths, climbs trees. It
must be some kind of trick. Max decides to prove to the world that Poppy
is a cheater who has a peepee. A surprise awaits him.
I’m guessing we don’t have this kind of thing in schools in Australia, but does anyone know? I think it’s a good idea to challenge sexism as early as possible. What do you think?

* The best translation I could come up with for zézette. English seems to have no problem with cute names for penises, but can be a bit evasive about lady-bits.

Le 14 février, l’illustrateur Marc Daniau, l’auteur de «Tous à poil» dénoncé par Jean-François Copé, est très énervé.
Ce n’est pas tant pour la fausse information lancée par le président de
l’UMP qu’il s’insurge, mais parce qu’il s’attaque au contenu d’un livre
pour la jeunesse qui, selon lui, «défend des valeurs républicaines» : « En
peignant des gens nus courant se baigner, des élèves et des
professeurs, des gros et des maigres, des noirs et des blancs, des
hommes et des femmes, je montre que nous nous ressemblons tous,
quelque soit notre situation, notre couleur de peau ou notre sexe. Quand
nous sommes nus, c’est « liberté, égalité, fraternité » ! »
Pour l’illustrateur, Jean-François Copé « s’est fait de la publicité », et a joué « les père-la-morale» à ses dépends. En
s’en prenant à lui, cible facile et anonyme, le politicien a voulu
raccrocher le mouvement lancé par la droite catholique contre une
prétendue « dégradation des moeurs » et la « théorie du genre » – qui serait insidieusement diffusée par les nouveaux «ABCD de l’égalité » promus par le ministère de l’éducation. Si Marc Daniau trouve « très grave » qu’un homme politique appelle à censurer un livre, il s’offusque qu’on «s’en prenne à un artiste, c’est-à-dire une personne qui cherche et invente.»
« Je n’ai pas voulu faire un tract, proteste -t-il, mais donner à réfléchir aux jeunes sur ces questions de nudité et de genre, tout en défendant des valeurs humanistes.»

Sales of children's book soar after right-winger's TV attack

Sales of a children's book have soared after a right-wing politician slammed it on television. More than 1,200 copies of Tous à poil! (Everbody naked!) were ordered in three days after Jean-François Copé of the mainstream right UMP said it sent shivers down his spine, the publishers announced on Wednesday.
Copé brandished the book, which features various characters - a businessman, a teacher, an old lady - stripping off and running to the beach, on a TV programme on Sunday, claiming that it was recommended for use in primary schools.
Since then it has shot to number two on Amazon's French site and 1,287 copies, at 15 euros a piece, had been ordered on the internet or in bookshops by Wednesday, according to publishers Rouergue.
The company, which only sold 1,500 copies when the book appeared in 2011, will order a reprint as soon as stocks are exhausted.
Copé on Thursday hit back at Socialist ministers who accused him of book-burning tendencies, accusing them of "hate-filled language".
His comments come amid a row over a government project to combat gender stereotypes in schools.
Ministers say that the book is not recommended in the programme but mentioned by the Grenoble education authority at the suggestion of a local NGO.
The right-wing Printemps français movement, which arose from last year's campaign against gay marriage, confirmed this week that it was targeting libraries to press them to withdraw books it claims propagate "gender theory".
The group's leader, Béatrice Bourges, said that members were phoning and emailing libraries "all over the place" after Culture Minister Aurélie Filippetti denounced pressure on libraries from "extremist movements".
Filippetti said that such groups "put pressure on the personnel, go through the shelves with a particular obsession for the children's section and demand the withdrawal of any books not corresponding to the moral they claim to incarnate".
The right-wing Le Figaro newspaper quoted several libraries as saying that the campaign has been small scale and found no cases of people going to libraries.

Nu
comme un Grec, pour se dévêtir dans l’Antiquité, ou bien naturiste,
dénudé pour vivre mieux, c’est l’histoire de l’évolution du regard porté
sur le corps, le sien bien sûr, mais aussi celui des autres, du "bon
sauvage" à l'"indigène". Une histoire du corps l'été, tout nu et tout
bronzé !
