Zouk Music & Dance Origins
The term originally meant "dance party" in French Antillean Creole and is characterized by its fusion of Caribbean, African, and North American styles. Zouk music became prominent in the 1980s in the French Antilles - Caribbean islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique and has become popular around the world (as well as Saint Lucia, Dominica, and Haiti).
Music: Roots in styles like Compas, Cadence, and Beguine. Fusion of Afro-Caribbean rhythms, French Creole lyrics, electronic sounds, and sophisticated recording technology.
Dance: Zouk, popular dance music associated mainly with the Caribbean islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique, as well all in the French Antilles. Often associated with the music, a dance form that has evolved into various derivatives like Zouk-love and Kizomba.
