"Santa Baby" was originally recorded by Eartha Kitt with Henri RenΓ© and his orchestra in New York City on October 6, 1953. It was released by RCA Victor Records as catalog number 20-5502 (in the USA), and by EMI on the His Master's Voice label as catalog number B 10728. The song was a huge hit for Kitt, and she later said that it was one of her favorite songs to record; she reprized it in the 1954 film New Faces. Kitt also reprized the original song in a 1963 re-recording for Kapp Records, with a more uptempo arrangement. (Madonna's popular rendition for the 1987 charity album A Very Special Christmas is based on this latter version.) In 1954, Eartha Kitt recorded a new version of the song with new lyrics titled "This Year's Santa Baby", to no commercial success. Writers listed did not change. The song was featured in the 1989 film Driving Miss Daisy.
New Faces was a musical revue with songs and comedy skits tied together
by a quirky plot. It ran on Broadway for nearly a year in 1952 and was
then made into a motion picture in 1954. It helped jump start the
careers of several young performers including Paul Lynde, Alice
Ghostley, Eartha Kitt, Carol Lawrence, performer/writer Mel Brooks (as
Melvin Brooks), and lyricist Sheldon Harnick. The film was basically a
reproduction of the stage revue with a thin plot added. The plot
involved a producer and performer (Ronny Graham) in financial trouble
and is trying to stave off an angry creditor long enough to open his
show. A wealthy Texan offers to help out, on the condition that his
daughter be in the show.
Lyrics | Santa Baby |
Santa baby, slip a sable under the tree for me | To a platinum mine |
Been an awful good girl | Santa cutie, and hurry down the chimney tonight |
Santa baby, and hurry down the chimney tonight | Santa baby, and fill my stocking with a duplex and checks |
Santa baby, an auto space convertible too, light blue | Sign your 'x' on the line |
I'll wait up for you, dear | Santa baby, and hurry down the chimney tonight |
Santa baby, and hurry down the chimney tonight | Come and trim my Christmas tree |
Think of all the fun I've missed | With some decorations bought at Tiffany |
Think of all the fellas that I haven't kissed | I really do believe in you |
Next year I could be also good | Let's see if you believe in me |
If you'll check off my Christmas list | Santa baby, forgot to mention one little thing, a ring |
Santa honey, I want a yacht and really that's not a lot | I don't mean on the phone |
Been an angel all year | Santa baby, and hurry down the chimney tonight |
Santa baby, and hurry down the chimney tonight | Hurry down the chimney tonight |
Santa cutie, there's one thing I really do need, the deed | Hurry, tonight |
