World Naked Gardening Day

World Naked
Gardening Day

And apparently, this weekend, the entire world has its “Naked Gardening Day.”
Yes, that’s right, according to the blog “All Nudist,”
Saturday, May 6 is World Naked Gardening Day.

You’re welcome.
Today is the first Saturday in May. And everyone knows what that means, right? It's annual World Naked Gardening Day!

It is especially a thing in the British countryside, where every day could be naked gardening day. At the Abbey House Gardens in Malmesbury, for instance, clothing is optional.
GlobalPost Senior Correspondent Corinne Purtill writes that visiting the bucolic botanic garden surrounding the private home is a high point on the summer social calendar for Britain’s small but dedicated community of nudists (or naturists, as they’re called in England).

“True nudism, practitioners said, is about enjoying nakedness for its own sake, without sexual connotations. Again and again, people described life au naturel with the same word: freedom,” Purtill writes.

The world naked gardening day is an annual event celebrated on the first Saturday of May. The event witnesses the participation of both gardeners as well as non–gardeners. This event has become an annual tradition that celebrates weeding, planting seeds and trimming hedges. This event has been linked to the movement led by nudist couples and nudist singles who promote unashamed acceptance of the human body.

According to founders of this event, the world naked gardening day is meant to be lighthearted and is strictly non-political in nature.

Significance of such events:
While this kind of an event spreads the message of ‘go green’, it also encourages people to go nude and accept each other the way they are. As a matter of fact, global climate change and discrimination are the two most talked about international issues that most nations are trying to deal with.
With an annual event like the world naked gardening day, both these issues can be addressed effectively.
In fact, this is not the only event that amalgamates nudism with other global issues. A lot of cycle rallies are organized by naturist organizations in various parts of the world that encourage people to spread their message in the form of body paintings and art cycles. However, there has been a lot of criticism surrounding these events due to the participation of nudists.

Motivation
According to organizers of this event, gardening is the second most popular activity, after swimming that people are ready to do naked. The world naked gardening day is endorsed by The Naturist Society, Clothes Free International as well as American Association for Nude Recreation.

The American Association for Nude Recreation described naked gardening as a healthy practice and a way of boosting self-image. Exercising outdoors allows your body to absorb more Vitamin D, thereby helping you achieve a spectacular overall tan.

Historical References
According to experts, naked gardening has biblical references too. Historians claim that Adam and Eve were noted to practice naked gardening prior to the fall of man, in the book of Genesis.

Popular American lyrical poet Edna St. Vincent Millay, was known to practice naked gardening at her steeple top estate in New York. Edna has followed it as part of her Bohemian lifestyle.

Celebrities who follow naked gardening
PETA spokesperson and actress Alicia Silverstone admits that she had started practicing naked gardening in her childhood days. In an interview with the Health Magazine, she told she would always get in the pool naked after her gardening session.
